ARTIST STATEMENT

Every individual’s reality is shaped by personal experiences, beliefs, and emotions which can be shared among humanity to create relationship. This idea has brought the focus of her work to the moods evoked by different environments and formal elements. The reactions that surface from viewing artworks stem from these underlying experiences and emotions. They create a lens from which to view reality. By stirring these emotions and drawing the experiences out, Emily seeks connection. She seeks to break the divide between artist and art-observer; between one viewer and the next. Her hope is that these works allow viewers to see her lens of reality while interpreting the pieces through their own perspectives, and to see the similarities between. It's all about relationship and connection. All seek to understand, to be understood, and to belong.

Due to their stark lines and layering properties, she largely uses charcoal, chalk pastels, and conté in her drawings, finding interest in the gestural styles of Edgar Degas and Egon Schiele. In painting, she mainly uses oil, referring to the style of Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne.
